On Friday 11 October 2019, Breadline Africa celebrated the launch of its 500th structure since 1993. Thornton Road Primary School in Athlone, Cape Town is the beneficiary of a brand new kitchen to ensure that the children on its feeding programme receive a cooked meal every school day!

In June this year, Thornton Road Primary School approached one of the organisation’s contractors (Container Rentals and Sales) to sponsor a container kitchen. They in turn, referred their request to Breadline Africa and an agreement was made to jointly fund the structure.

Due to a lack of a kitchen and dining space, the principal had converted one of the classrooms into a kitchen/dining room for more than 120 children who are on the school feeding programme. With the growth in enrolment – the school now has 524 children and urgently needed the classroom for teaching purposes.

Container Rental and Sales generously offered to fund the conversion costs and Breadline Africa donors funded the 12m container.

Principal, Mr Mogamat Noor Luddy thanked all the guests, especially Container Rental and Sales and Breadline Africa for seeing his vision and moving mountains to make the new kitchen a reality. He spoke about how the Western Cape Education Department had threatened to close the school five years ago, when the school numbers had dropped to less than 200 and the school was dilapidated. With great drive, vision, passion, and awesome support from many different parties such as the SGB, teachers and partnering school, they were able to re-establish and re-launch the school as a sustainable institution.

Breadline Africa’s Director, Marion Wagner, wished all the learners the very best going forward. “With the support of our donors, we are proud to be able to open our 500th unit today – I hope that the children of Thornton Road Primary School enjoy many healthy nutritious meals prepared in their new kitchen!”

This milestone celebration was also attended by three of Breadline Africa’s international trustees and most of the South African board of directors.
