The children of Khanyisa Educare Centre waited for the launch of their new classroom before closing the book on their 2019 academic year and ended it in style!

The school’s bubbly principal, Ms Bonsiwa Mxhakaza explained just how excited the Grade R teacher had been when the containers were being delivered. She just could not ‘container’ her excitement when she realised that she would no longer have to share a classroom with another age group! This new classroom structure is just what the pre-school needs to start the 2020 academic year off well. She also thanked Sikhula Sonke for their guidance and support, attributing much of her success to their involvement.

Ms Nomise Plaatjies a community member, spoke of how highly regarded the ECD centre is in the community. She said she has seen several parents come to register their children in the centre, only to be disappointed when they are told that the centre is full. She congratulated Khanyisa for expanding their facilities and thanked Breadline Africa for making this vision possible, not just Khanyisa Educare, but for the entire community .

Previously the Department of Social Development had criticised the centre because two separate age groups were being taught in a single classroom. The biggest issue was that the Grade R learners were not being taught in their own dedicated space, to properly prepare them for their integration into primary school.

The principal, Boniswa has been in the field of early childhood development for many years and during this time, she has made a significant impact, which has also earned her accolades. For four years she led the Khayelitsha ECD forum and is currently the deputy chairperson of this forum. All the teachers at this site are well trained and attentive to the needs of the children, very proactive and compassionate individuals. The children are always well turned out and well mannered.

Ms Melanie Jackson, Breadline Africa’s Marketing Manager, referred to the classroom as a Christmas gift to Khanyisa Educare Centre, and encouraged the children to cut the ribbon and enjoy this lovely present! She wished the children every success and thanked the teachers for their dedication.
