Khomanani Educare Centre, Khayelitsha, Cape Town, Western Cape, Classrooms, Toilet and Kitchen Handover, 25 January 2018

On a scorching summer’s day in Cape Town, the children and carers at Khomanani Educare Centre were the grateful recipients of a prefabricated 60m2 classroom for their Grade R class, along with a six-metre toilet container and a 12-metre container divided into a kitchen and classroom for the babies.

Breadline Africa’s Programme Manager, Puleng Phooko said: “The corrugated iron facilities that were previously used as classrooms were not structurally sound, which created a safety risk for the children. The classrooms became too hot in summer and during the rainy season, the roof leaked. Whenever it rained, all the classrooms flooded thus making it difficult for children and their teachers to concentrate on classwork. In addition, there was no dedicated space for the kitchen equipment, and it was frequently shifted to avoid the many roof leaks. The principal went as far as selling her car to repair the leaking roof, but even this desperate measure was not enough.”

With the help of Breadline Africa’s generous donors, and with the support of local implementation partners, Sikhula Sonke and The Unlimited Child, the children have a wonderfully exciting new school year to look forward to.

Nokuthula Aapie, the principal of Khomanani Educare Centre, declared her pride in the new classrooms and thanked Breadline Africa for assisting in ending the nightmare of retaining good teachers as a result of the poor infrastructure conditions.

Mr Mdebuka Mthwazi, from Sikhula Sonke, recalled how shocked he was when he first visited the centre. He could not believe the terrible conditions within which the children were being taught and are now very excited by the new classrooms, kitchen and toilets.

Ms Phooko added that this was the first launch of 2018 – the year of Mandela, as it is the year that Mr Mandela would have turned 100. In addition, Breadline Africa celebrates the 25th anniversary of its founding. All of these combined into a super special day to celebrate new and greater beginnings!
