These Grade-R children deserve a solid foundation in their own classroom before moving onto Primary School.

Location: KwaDabeka, 24 kms north-west of Durban, KZN

About: Established in 2010, Nhlakanipho Educare Centre is a home-from-home for 49 children. The centre is situated beside a local primary school and all the children move on to Grade R. One small brick classroom houses all 49 children. More infrastructure is required to separate the age groups and allow for each child to receive learning opportunities that are appropriate to their age group. There isn’t any space for a reading corner or play corner in the current classroom.

Challenge: The challenge for this educare centre is they cannot afford to build more classrooms, as most parents or guardians of the enrolled children are unemployed, making any thought of extending the facility a dream, and very far from reality.

The need: A classroom, made up of two converted six-metre shipping containers will provide a solid foundation before the children move onto Primary School.

Beneficiaries: 49 children from 10 months to 5 years
