A 12m container split into a kitchen and dining area will allow this primary school to continue their daily feeding programme.

Location: Mitchell’s Plain, Western Cape

About: Portland Primary School has been operating since 1979. This primary school is registered and under the leadership of Principal  E Braaf.

Challenge: The school caters to the needs of 1,088 children from impoverished communities in the area. It is a no-fee paying school, which means that its only source of income is the annual allocation from the government.

The school has a feeding programme but does not have a functioning kitchen from which to prepare and serve meals. Currently, the food is prepared from the storeroom area and a corrugated iron sheet structure has been added to create a space where children can sit and eat their meals. Unfortunately, this area leaks when it rains.

The need: A large 12m container separated into a kitchen with a dining area will allow the school to roll out the feeding programme in a safe environment.

Beneficiaries: 1088 children (Grade R – 7)
