Insufficient space to accommodate the children has led to an urgent need for another classroom.

Location: Worcester, Western Cape

About: This early childhood development centre was established in 1994 – the dawn of democracy in South Africa. Unfortunately, Siphumelele Educare Centre has experienced many challenges since lockdown began with various items having been stolen, the most valuable of which is the fire extinguisher. Mattresses and blankets were also stolen, and the municipality’s health inspector has advised that they need to be replaced.

Challenge: When it was originally established, the centre had sufficient space in the various structures on the property but following a health inspection, one of the classrooms had to be demolished due to fire safety non-compliance. There is now insufficient space to accommodate the children and there is an urgent need to provide another classroom.

The need: Siphumelele Educare Centre needs a 2x6m container classroom to become sustainable in their community.

Beneficiaries: 60 children (0 to 5 years)
