On 10 December 2021, the staff and children of Wavecrest Primary School in Mitchells Plain in the Western Cape, along with the Breadline Africa team, celebrated the launch of a 6-metre container kitchen. Guests attending the launch were entertained by the school’s very talented jump rope team, who are preparing to compete in a provincial competition in January 2022. A lovely poem was also read to the guests by Zoe Petersen, a grade 6 learner.
The much-needed container kitchen was co-funded by WeBuyCars and Breadline Africa. The school had been making use of a classroom to operate the school feeding programme, which feeds more than 300 learners each day. The classroom has been utilised for over six years. But, with the demand of learner space increasing, the school was running out of classroom space and desperately needed to reclaim the kitchen. Just in time, WeBuyCars and Breadline Africa were able to place the new container kitchen to allow for an additional Grade 4 classroom to be available from the start of the new school year in January 2022.
The principal, Mr Deon Bougardt, said that the school realised early on that by providing a meal at school, they could ensure that the children were able to attend classes every day. He expressed his gratitude to Breadline Africa and WeBuyCars for allowing the school to continue the work they are doing.
Janine McEvoy, Breadline Africa’s Business Development Manager, told guests how Breadline Africa loves to support primary schools in need of help, especially when it comes to providing nutritional support. Janine thanked WeBuyCars for believing in the work that Breadline Africa does and assisting to make an impact in these communities.
Stefan Le Roux, Branch Manager of WeBuyCars, explained that one of the company’s strongest values is to serve people and give back. Stefan said that this alignment was the catalyst for the collaboration with Breadline Africa. He said that the real heroes were Mr Bougardt and his staff, as well as the kitchen team.
“We wish Wavecrest Primary School all the best for the future and we know that many nutritious meals will be prepared in the new kitchen,” he concluded.
