The school is currently cooking in a classroom that was converted into a kitchen area – but it is needed to provide a Grade 4 classroom

Location: Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, Western Cape

About: Wavecrest Primary School has been serving the community of Rocklands in Mitchells Plain for over 20 years. This no-fee primary school has experienced a number of challenges as it continues to provide a quality education in a challenging environment. With a school motto of “perseverance prevails”, the school has worked hard to provide each child with a safe environment during their formative years. They applied to Breadline Africa for further infrastructure, so that they could improve their offering to each child who attends the school.

Challenge: The school is currently cooking in a classroom that was converted into a kitchen area – but it is needed to provide a Grade 4 classroom in January 2022 and they need to begin the process of converting the space back into a functional classroom. The school feeds 300 learners per day and even with COVID-19 regulations in place, which sees learners attending on alternate school days, the children still come and collect their meals at school each day.

The need: A 6m kitchen container will provide a safe space to prepare meals as per the nutritional programme, which is supported by the Peninsula School Feeding Association.

Beneficiaries: 1,100 children from Grade R to Grade 7
