About the project:

Noordhoek Primary School was established in 1979 and is situated in Velddrift, a small fishing-village on the West Coast, approximately 158,3 km from Cape Town. Noordhoek Primary School is the only school in the local community that offers a Grade R programme with qualified teachers. Neighbouring farm children also benefit from the primary school’s location and education programmes.

The challenge:

The community members primarily make a living from the sea. Most of the parents are seasonal workers, with a regular income for only five months of the year, depending on what the sea has to offer. The average income of each family is less than R500 per week and some households’ income is R200 per week. Noordhoek Primary School is a no-fee school as all the children come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The need:

The school urgently requires an additional classroom to allow for sufficient space for their Grade R learners – applications continue to stream in from the community. Noordhoek does not charge fees for Grade R, ensuring that as many children as possible are ready for Grade 1.
