About the project:

Siphuhlise Educare and Night Centre was established in 2008, and has grown to serve 45 children under the age of 6 from the Kuyasa community in Khayelitsha. The original container structure that served as the centre has long been removed and over the years new structures have been added to accommodate more children. Principal Gloria Ncediwe Msuthu is supported by three partner organisations, namely Sikhula Sonke, The Unlimited Child and Ikamva Labantu to provide the best educational outcomes for the children attending.

The challenge:

Although the centre has two prefabricated structures in descent condition, another vibractere classroom structure, the largest on the premises, is in poor condition and requires urgent upgrades to the floor, roof and insulation. Another shack structure that served as a kitchen to cook meals for the children was condemned by the building inspector and demolished. The children and staff also make use of free standing concrete toilets that are unsuitable for the needs of the centre. Gloria wants her educare centre to be registered, however inadequate infrastructure is one of her bigger hurdles preventing registration. She would like her children to be accommodated in a safe, warm and descent environment, where more parents will want to send their children to prepare for their educational journeys.

The need:

Siphuhlise Educare and Night Centre urgently requires an upgrade to an existing classroom, and a new toilet and kitchen prefabricated structure to properly meet the centre’s needs.
