About the project:

Siwelile Primary School in Ezibomvini, KwaZulu-Natal has 334 children enrolled from the surrounding community. Lacking municipal sewerage connections, both children and staff are compelled to make use of pit toilets, most of which are in terrible condition.

The challenge:

There are 10 separate pit toilets encased in plastic housings that are collapsing and broken with no doors for privacy. Principal, Constance Mpanza has discouraged children from using these facilities and instead they use a small block of newer ventilated pit toilets. However, these facilities are insufficient for the number of children at the school.

The need:

Breadline Africa aims to restore dignity to the children and staff of Siwelile by replacing the old pit toilets with new low-flush toilets connected to septic tanks. Additionally, we plan to refurbish the newer toilet block using dry units for back-up in case of water shortages. 17 safe toilet facilities will be made available.
