About the project:

Siyanga Educare Centre was established in 2010. Nomthandazo Rhorho, the founder and principal, used to work at a guest house in Pringle Bay and could only be with her children and husband when she was off duty.  She always knew that she wanted to be in an educational space, where she could help less fortunate children.

She was horrified by the high child abuse statistics in her community and when she decided to resign from her job and moved back home, she went from door to door, offering to help look after her neighbours’ children. This soon became a full-time job and she opened the centre formally, and even though many parents couldn’t pay her, Gloria still accommodated them, knowing that she would rather have them be in a safe space during the day.

Despite the poor condition of the structure and lack of resources, Nomthandazo is currently the chairperson of Sizimele Early Childhood Development Area Forum, which represents 13 ECD centres, falling under the umbrella of the broader Khayelitsha ECD Forum.  Her teachers also receive ongoing training at the College of Cape Town and through the centre’s partner, Sikhula Sonke.

The challenge:

Her current centre is located in a leaky shack structure. The staff use buckets during rainy days to catch the water and try to keep the children as dry as possible. In winter, the shack is freezing cold and it bakes during the hot summer season.

The centre also has no proper toilet facilities – the children make use of white plastic chemical potties, which are collected regularly by the municipality.

The need:

Siyanga Educare Centre urgently needs a full early childhood development centre to ensure that the children learn in a safe and clean environment.
