About the project:

Someleze Educare Centre was established in 2006, and offers instruction in both isiXhosa and English. The children attending the centre are aged from birth to five years old. The staff receive training support from Sikhula Sonke and they form part of the Monwabisi Early Childhood Development Forum.  In 2022, a brick classroom was built for the Grade RR learners (two years before Grade 1) but this has become too small for all of the children. During the course of last year, VPUU upgrading built two toilets and the local municipality disposes of the waste regularly.

The challenge:

There are 72 children enrolled at the centre, but there isn’t enough space for everyone. They still make use of plastic potties, because two toilets are not sufficient for the number of children, and meals are cooked in a nearby shack.

The need:

The staff and children urgently need a dedicated kitchen, another classroom to accommodate increasing numbers, and more safe and hygienic toilets.
