About the project:

Springvalley Primary School was established in 1962 by a missionary, Pastor Becker. The school has 248 children enrolled, and classes range from grade R to grade 7. The learners come from neighbouring farms and a nearby township known as Thubelihle. This school is situated in a rural area of Mpumalanga and has no electricity. The office is powered by a small solar generation system and the school’s water is supplied by 13 JoJo tanks that the municipality fills several times a month.

The challenge:

The school currently uses a small container as both an office and a library – there is no space for the children to sit and read. The school is overcrowded and in need of additional classrooms to accommodation all the children, so they will have to repurpose the library space. Literacy is such a fundamental aspect of learning and a dedicated library with age-appropriate story books would help the children to develop a love for reading.

The need:

Springvalley Primary School needs a 30m2 prefabricated library, with shelving to display an assortment of language and age-appropriate books. The children, while keen to read, do not have access to a functional library to help them reach their literacy milestones. Literacy partner, Room to Read has already donated some books and will ensure that the future of the school’s library is sustained for years to come.
