Thank you for your support

Dear Friend

Breadline Africa has enjoyed an exciting 2022, with important milestones reached and services delivered around the country. As always, our partnerships have played a critical role in these achievements – you can read more in our latest Annual Review here.

In May this year, we were thrilled to take delivery of not one, but two new vehicles, thanks to our generous donors. These robust utility vehicles are great for taking supplies and equipment into informal settlements and rural areas, getting our team to and from these locations safely and in comfort!

There was great excitement when we launched our 900th infrastructure unit in October – one of 153 structures that have been delivered this year. We also supported 25 projects with food ingredients, of which 21 projects are pre-schools, averaging a delivery of more than 50,000 meals per month – and a total of 4.2 million meals since March 2020.

The shortage of shipping containers and increasing prices led us to explore alternative building materials and we have piloted different options at nine sites in the Western Cape, Gauteng and Eastern Cape. Interventions included: a sandbag classroom, a marine fibreglass combination kitchen/toilet, a strawbale classroom, a biomass insulated concrete classroom and toilet, a rammed earth classroom, a plastic aggregate brick classroom, and a waterless, compost-generating toilet system.

Some of these new initiatives proved better than others, but all have moved us towards our goal of placing 1,000 infrastructure units by 2023, impacting more than 250,000 children.

As the year draws to a close, I take this opportunity, on behalf of the trustees, staff and beneficiaries of Breadline Africa, to thank you for your support and to wish you a safe and joyous festive season and a great start to 2023.
