Life changed for the better for the 87 children and teachers of Esididini Community Project on Saturday 19 August 2023 – four low-flush toilets and hand-washing station replaced the two pit toilets that were the only facilities available prior to the placement of the new units.
Esididini Community Project was established in 2004 by Goodness Nhlengethwa and is a pre-school located in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. Goodness is a teacher, and she was approached by some local parents to ask her to help them prepare their children for school and keep them safe during the day. In the years since its establishment, Esididini has become more than just a pre-school, several community development projects are being implemented at the centre.
Goodness expressed her gratitude: “Thank you for your generous donation of toilets to our institution. Your contribution has already made a significant impact on our crèche and the lives of the children, parents, teachers, and community members we serve. The addition of these new toilets holds immense importance, not just for us, but for everyone using these premises regularly.”
She added that the little ones were overjoyed by the new toilets. “They now have clean, safe, and hygienic facilities, which will improve their overall comfort and well-being. No longer will they have to worry about using inadequate or unsanitary facilities, allowing them to focus better on their studies and playtime!”
The parents added their thanks, saying that they were delighted that the children now have access to modern and clean toilets. They explained that it gave them peace of mind, knowing that their children’s health and hygiene were being prioritised.
The facility’s governing body chairman, Sandile Nhlengethwa had the last word: “Your donation of toilets has already begun to transform Esididini. lt has brought smiles to the faces of our children, relief to the hearts of parents, and pride to our community, and ease to our teachers. Your generosity is making a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve, and we are profoundly grateful for your support.”
The whole community came to witness the new toilets being signed-off and demonstrated – there was great celebration, with a lot of singing and dancing!
