• Sokhanyo Primary School, in Gugulethu on the outskirts of the city of Cape Town did not have a library and relied on classroom reading corners for literacy support. The new library offers learners a wide range of books and educational materials which teachers also use to support their lesson plans.
• Principal, Thanduxolo Enoch Mthalane, told those present at the launch event: “Our school is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and our motto is: ‘Khanya ukhanyise’, be bright and brighten others. Our vision is clear teaching, learning in a democratic, inclusive and viable environment. This gift of a library with more than 2,700 books will go a long way towards assisting us to achieve this vision.”
• Breadline Africa Partnership Manager, Caroline Tinsley added: “I would like to thank Biblionef for sourcing all the reading material and connecting us with the Bookery, who will provide training for the teachers and provide the facilities for the school to have a book borrowing system. I hope you will take books home and introduce them to your family and friends. I would also like to thank Allan Gray Philanthropy. I know that together, we have contributed to the success of this library.
