There couldn’t be a better day to officially open a library than on Valentine’s Day! On 14 February, the 1,478 children and teachers of Weltevreden Valley Core Primary School officially took ownership of their fully stocked and equipped 18m² prefabricated unit.

It was made possible through the generosity of the Novus Holdings Future Foundations Initiative, which has already helped more than 100,000 children at over 200 schools by enhancing education and improving literacy.

The school was established in 1998 and it serves the communities of Phillipi and Weltevreden Valley. The school’s motto, ‘Education is the light’ is a key driver for the staff to provide a quality education that will allow the children to escape the cycle of poverty.

“Working with organisations like Novus Holdings allows Breadline Africa to place much-needed infrastructure in under-resourced communities to support early childhood development across Southern Africa,” said Marion Wagner, Breadline Africa’s Director.

“By installing this library, we are assured that learners are one step closer to achieving their goals. It is our belief, that by giving children a library with access to age and language appropriate books, it will help them to develop a love for reading.”

She explained that Novus Holdings and Breadline Africa have worked together for the past five years and have completed two other similar structures, with more to follow in the future.

Principal, Mr Dumisane Makhaba expressed his gratitude to Novus Holdings for their support and assured everyone that the facility would be well-utilised. Marion thanked the team at Novus Holdings and the many donors who have made this library possible.
