Prioritising safe and hygienic toilet facilities for Jabulisile Pre-school
Jabulisile Pre-school, established in 2017, is located in the Mshadza Trust community, a remote area 29 kilometres from White River and 45 kilometres from the city of Mbombela. These economic hubs provide vital resources and services that are often out of reach for the community.
The pre-school was founded after it became apparent that many children were not adequately prepared for primary school, as few had access to early childhood education. Today, it serves 38 children aged 2 to 3 years old, with three staff members and a centre manager dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment.
The centre operates under challenging conditions, with limited access to essential social and health services.
The Mshadza Trust community lacks a proper water and sanitation system, relying on sporadic supply from community taps. This lack of reliable water severely impacts the centre’s ability to provide basic sanitation for the children.
Jabulisile Pre-school faces a critical need for safe and adequate sanitation facilities. Currently, the centre relies on a single, unsafe pit toilet that is used by both children and staff. This situation poses significant health and safety risks, especially in a setting where water scarcity is a constant challenge. The lack of proper toilets not only affects the well-being of the children but also hinders the centre’s ability to create a conducive learning environment. The provision of three new waterless toilets would greatly improve conditions, ensuring a safer and healthier space for the children to learn and grow. This investment would address the immediate safety concerns and reduce dependency on the unreliable water supply in the village, creating a more sustainable solution for the community’s needs.
