In the heart of the rural village of Bakenberg in Limpopo Province, Matlhaba Creche stands as a testament to the power of dedication and community spirit. Founded in 1994 by Thabitha Baloyi, this creche began with just 9 children and has since grown into a vital part of the community, now nurturing 50 children aged 1 to 6 years old with trained and qualified practitioners. The mother tongue of the children is Sepedi, and the creche prides itself on fostering a learning environment that respects and integrates their cultural heritage.
Despite facing numerous challenges, Matlhaba Creche continues to provide a safe, educational, and nurturing environment for the little young minds of Bakenberg. Only 70% of the parents can afford to pay the monthly creche fee of R300 yet the teachers are committed to their roles, receiving a salary of R2000 per month. Their dedication goes beyond the classroom, as they organise educational trips twice a year, enriching their children’s learning experiences. The Department of Education provides feeding support, ensuring that the children receive nutritious meals essential for their growth and development. While Matlhaba Creche has achieved remarkable success, the current facilities are far from adequate. The structures are dilapidated and insufficient to comfortably accommodate the growing number of children.
The need for an additional classroom, a proper kitchen, improved toilet facilities, and an office with a sickbay is urgent. A new kitchen would allow for the preparation of meals on-site, improving efficiency and quality. Additional classroom and toilets would alleviate overcrowding and enhance hygiene, while an office with a sickbay would ensure that the children’s health needs are promptly attended to.
