The school desperately needs decent toilet facilities to replace unsafe pit toilets

About the project:

Mpofanyana Primary School is a small rural school located on a farm near Mooi River in KwaZulu-Natal. It serves 33 learners from the surrounding farming community, many of whom have no alternative access to education – the next nearest school is 14km away. Breadline Africa is fundraising to provide the school with four new low-flush toilet facilities connected to a septic tank, along with handwashing stations. This essential upgrade will ensure learners have access to safe, dignified sanitation and can stay in school for a full day of learning.

The need:

For years, Mpofanyana Primary relied on structurally unsafe pit toilets that were condemned and closed, leaving the school without usable sanitation facilities. While a few temporary chemical toilets were brought in, they remain unused due to a complete lack of waste removal services in the area. As a result, the school is forced to close at 12:30 each day so children can go home to relieve themselves – a situation that is both unacceptable and unsafe.

The impact:

Every child deserves access to safe, reliable sanitation at school. Without it, learning is disrupted, dignity is compromised, and health is put at risk. Breadline Africa is working to change this by demolishing the unsafe pit toilets and constructing four new low-flush toilets with proper handwashing facilities. These will be connected to a septic tank system, ensuring long-term sustainability. This intervention will restore full school days and give learners the safe, supportive environment they need to thrive.
