Improving Health and Hygiene at Thakaneng Excellence Academy
Established in 2010 by Mathabo Meriam Ntsasa, Thakaneng Excellence Academy in Bloemfontein, Free State, was founded on a deep commitment to meet the critical need for local early childhood educational facilities. Initially responding to requests from parents seeking quality childcare and education, the academy now provides a nurturing learning environment for 73 children, supported by four dedicated teachers.
Thakaneng Excellence Academy operates on land owned by the principal and maintains an important partnership with the Lunchbox Fund.
The academy currently faces urgent health and hygiene challenges due to inadequate sanitation facilities. Children are forced to use buckets as makeshift toilets, while teachers rely on pit toilets located off-site, creating unsustainable and unhygienic conditions.
These conditions not only pose severe health risks but also affect the academy’s conditional registration status, which requires appropriate sanitation and infrastructure. Breadline Africa seeks funding of R150,000 to install three safe and hygienic toilets for children and one for teachers.
