About the project:

Vrystaat Primary School is located in rural KwaZulu-Natal near Mooi River and serves 235 learners from nearby farming communities. With no nearby schools and limited infrastructure, it is a vital resource for children in the area. Breadline Africa aims to replace the school’s unsafe pit toilets with new dry toilet units and urinals connected to a septic tank, along with handwashing facilities. This project will provide learners with safe, dignified sanitation and help restore a healthy, supportive learning environment.

The need:

In 2021, a safety officer from the uMgungundlovu District Municipality condemned Vrystaat Primary’s pit toilets, calling for their demolition. Since then, the school has relied on just five chemical toilets – three for girls and two for boys – meant as a temporary fix. These are grossly inadequate for 235 children, leading to long queues, a lack of privacy, and unsanitary conditions. With no running water and weekly deliveries by truck, the situation continues to compromise both hygiene and education.

The impact:

Proper sanitation is essential for learning, dignity, and health. At Vrystaat Primary, overcrowded and insufficient toilets are disrupting the school day, with some learners forced to avoid breaks or queue for long periods just to use the toilet. The lack of adequate facilities impacts learners’ well-being and creates unnecessary barriers to education. Breadline Africa is stepping in to provide lasting infrastructure – safe, toilet facilities with handwashing stations – offering these children the safe, supportive environment they urgently need and deserve.
