On Friday 23 February 2024, Northway Primary School celebrated the grand opening of its new kitchen and dining room, providing 250 children with a vital start to their school.
Situated in the heart of the Ravensmead community on the outskirts of Cape Town, the school serves an impoverished community, many of whom come from households led by grandparents or single mothers reliant on government assistance.
Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Sun GrandWest and Breadline Africa, a once-abandoned art room has been transformed into a modern kitchen and dining area. Now, students have a clean, secure environment to enjoy a nutritious breakfast and lunch, enhancing their overall well-being and academic performance.
To mark the occasion, the Grade 7 students delighted attendees with a magical musical performance, creatively utilising kitchen utensils and everyday items.
The performance was the brainchild of Marionette Maart, a devoted Maths and English teacher, who also happens to be a qualified music instructor. She established the Kitchen Orchestra group to allow the learners to learn new skills and develop holistically.
Mervyn Naidoo, General Manager at Sun GrandWest, remarked, “The most crucial aspect is the tangible impact we make in our communities, leaving behind a legacy of meaningful change. It’s our responsibility to contribute positively to our communities, and we’re grateful for partners like Breadline Africa for their collaboration on this project.”
He further expressed their team’s commitment to returning to the school to implement additional interventions to support its development.
Johan Nel from Breadline Africa expressed gratitude to the donor, Sun GrandWest, for their dedication to enhancing educational facilities in the community.
