Impact achieved

Ubunye Educare Centre, an oasis in the poverty-stricken and underserved informal community of Dunoon, has taken a significant leap forward in its commitment to providing quality early childhood education. On 21 July 2023, Breadline Africa, in collaboration with Hyve Events, extended a helping hand to the centre by providing a 6m container classroom, transforming the educational landscape for 120 five- to six-year-old Grade R learners.

Ubunye Educare Centre is the first Grade R centre in the area and operates as a no-fee school to ensure that education is accessible to all. It serves as a crucial feeder pre-school for Dunoon Primary, Silverleaf Primary, and Sophakama Primary schools, preparing young children for a brighter future.

The new container classroom, generously sponsored by Hyve Events, will play a pivotal role in enhancing the learning experience for the children and supporting the dedicated educators at Ubunye Educare Centre. The versatile space will be utilised for various activities, including one-on-one support for struggling learners, external assessment of students, grade readiness tests and parent-teacher meetings, among others.

Principal, Felecia Jones, said: “This container classroom has made it possible for us to assist our struggling learners with the necessary skills required to make them school ready. It is also a safe environment where children can learn new skills, like musical instruments. This space is not only used by the learners, but by the community, too. We are currently running parent programmes and teacher workshops from this space.”

This converted shipping container began its life as a sales office that was used during the Mining Indaba in Cape Town in early 2023. Thereafter it was repurposed to meet the requirements for a remedial classroom. Breadline Africa’s Janine McEvoy expressed her gratitude to Hyve Events and wished the school many happy years of learning.
