About the project:

Reatlegile Primary School was established in 1968 and offered Grade 1 to Grade 4 at the time. It is located in Middelburg, a large farming and industrial town in the South African province of Mpumalanga. Languages spoken and taught at the school are Sepedi, isiZulu and English. This is a no-fee school, with 21 educators.

The challenge:

The school is overcrowded. The current building can’t accommodate the number of children attending every day. The two Grade R classes are currently temporarily housed in classrooms that the school actually needs for its Grade 4 to 7 learners. The school has a library, but it is situated in a small shack that leaks, damaging the books and making it an unpleasant environment to be in for any length of time.

The need:

The school urgently needs three classrooms, which will be set aside for the Grade R learners. They also require a decent library, so that all learners can access. A new library will allow the school to stock books without worrying about water damage.
